League City, Texas, is the largest city in Galveston County. Today, it is home to about 86,000 residents that enjoy easy access to both Houston and Galveston via Interstate 45.
History
The community's origins can be traced to a time when J.C. League bought some land from a man that had decided to enter the priesthood. The original town was platted along the tracks of the Galveston, Houston, and Henderson Railroad. The first lots were sold for $50 apiece. League was a prominent financier from Galveston. In 1907, he had several rail car loads of oak trees dropped off in what was first called Clear Creek. The so-called Butler oaks that are found along Main Street to this day were among those trees delivered to the community over a century ago. Ultimately, the community was renamed League City to pay homage to its founder.
